New this year: Every artist has a piece featured in the AVA Gallery. Opening night: Second Saturday Art Walk, July 13, 5:00-8:00pm.

Astoria is home to a rich and diverse number of visual artists. Brilliantly illuminating the creative talent, the 9 th annual Astoria Open Studios Tour opens the doors of professional and emerging artists’ workspaces for the general public, Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28 from 11am to 5pm each day.

Everyone, all ages, can enjoy this free public event, meeting the makers, and getting a close-up view of their techniques and media.

“We have 50 artists participating this year at 24 locations,” says Tour Coordinator, Annie Eskelin, “Each artist brings a very unique element to the tour. Some are working artists who make their livelihood from their art, others are following their passion day by day to whatever end that may lead. The tour surprises, amazes, inspires and teaches anyone who wants to join in.”

Robert Paulmenn, a full-time artist, has participated in the Studios Tour since moving here six years ago. “The studio tour is such a great time for me. I get to meet so many people who come back each year and talk to them about painting and the art community. The visitors to my studio get to see works in progress and learn about the process of painting. There is also the added bonus of selling a few drawings and oil sketches, some that are smaller studies of finished work that will end up in RiverSea Gallery. ”

Full color printed tour guides may be picked up at the AVA Gallery, located at 1010 Duane Street, or at most galleries, hotels and coffee shops in mid July. Coast Weekend will also have a map of the participating artists during the week of the tour. The guide includes information about which studios may be having demonstrations and which are accessible.
