It has been said that the artist's job is to find order in life and leave a record of what interested him--not what he thinks he ought to be interested in (John Sloan). What you will see in my studio is a way for me to share what interests me, what I find beauty in, and what speaks to me.
I am passionate about painting portraits, and I love the process of looking back and forth from photograph to painting to determine what makes that person look like that person. I think this comes from my work as a counselor and trying to understand people at a deep level. Sometimes when painting, I become aware of dynamics I had never understood before. A lot seems to be said in a face. As I'm painting, I am enjoying the person and I am trying to help the viewer see the qualities and personality that I see. I want the viewer to feel something!
I get excited by light and the patterns that light and shadows form. It is often the quality of light that attracts me to a particular portrait or scene. The more I paint, the more I focus on this. I also love color, and I strive to use as many colors as possible in my portraits and in shadows.
