degrees of abstraction
renee rowe & audrey Long
june 8 - july 7, 2019
Astoria Visual Arts is pleased to present two local artists, Renee Rowe and Audrey Long, both featuring new work at the AVA Gallery. The exhibit, "Abstraction & Unification," opens Saturday, June 8, with an artist reception during Art Walk, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
Renee Rowe uses many mediums including oil, acrylic, ink, pastel and watercolors as well as various recycled and found materials such as old house paint and scraps of paper. Her recent work includes a series of large abstract painting. She believes creating a work of art is a personal experience that doesn’t need to be analyzed historically to be enjoyed and appreciated. She states, “Creating abstract art provides many surprises and challenges.” Rowe received her BA in Art from Rutgers University in New Jersey studying with Roy Lichtenstein and George Segal and after graduation moved to New York City where she lived and worked for 10 years. Later, she moved to Colorado owning and managing galleries and started an art cooperative gallery in Pueblo. Currently, she lives in Astoria and makes her living as a full time artist.
AVA is also pleased to celebrate Astoria PRIDE with local ceramicist Audrey Long. Long will feature an installation of unified drinking vessels. She wants everyone to be drinking from the same vessels every day, knowing that hundreds of others are sharing this common experience. “It is important to me that the youth in my local and global community experience the unification of humanity. Drinking vessels are one of the oldest found objects throughout history. They are the objects we have the most intimate relationship with, and the only objects that are absolutely necessary to sustain life.” All vessels will be available by donation with all proceeds benefiting local and national LGBTQ youth support organizations.
The AVA Gallery is located at 1010 Duane Street.
