I moved to Astoria in 1983 after completing a Bachelors of Arts in “Book Arts” from the University of Santa Cruz, with a focus on Letter Press Printing, Illustrating and Hand-Binding.
Over the years, I have created a variety of one-of-a-kind pieces for local shops, art fairs and online. My art illustrates my own unique expression with a bent towards the mystical, magical and spiritual including: original books, illustrations, murals, marionettes, dolls, digital collage, cards, candles, paintings, fabric creations and most recently one-of-a-kind colorful wind chimes mobiles made from repurposed plastic ranging from small to very large.
In 2017 I completed a 30-year dream to create my own full color Tarot Card Deck which includes 78 illustrations (created using pencil, watercolor and pen) along with a 250-page companion guide book titled “Judith’s Tarot Guide Spirit Sez…”. As a self-taught reader for over 35 years, I have taken inspiration from a variety of sources and teachers and use it for personal growth and understanding.
I believe Tarot Card reading is an art form that can propel you forward into your destiny rather than be stuck in the past. Used as a therapeutic tool, the cards help us understand the mystery of that which is often hidden from us. It can tap into your spirit, connect with your highest good and open doorways through which visions, dreams, ideas and solutions to life’s dilemmas can enter.
Artist Statement This is my second year participating in the Astoria Open Studios Tour. My art, which ranges from painting, drawing and watercolor illustrations, to sculpted figures and hanging mobiles, is currently focused on creating one-of-a-kind hanging pieces I call Chakra and Jellyfish Windchimes.
These seemingly free-floating pieces vary in color, sizes and shape and give the illusion of floating in air. Some feature small LED lights to reflect and enhance the flowing mobile art. Often mistaken for glass, these eclectic pieces which hang from roots, branches or colorful discs are actually created from a variety of re-purposed and recycled plastics.
For the 2018 Astoria Open Studios Tour I am creating a new series of over-sized mobiles ranging up to 6 feet in width and length. To show off the bright multi-layered colors of my hangings, I will be displaying them in my backyard (weather permitting of course!)
At my home studio I will also be showing my newly created, original, full-color Tarot Deck with 78 original illustrations created by pencil, pen, ink and watercolor, along with my 250-page self-published companion guide book, “Judith’s Tarot Guide Spirit Sez…”. Ten-minute readings will also be available during the tour for a $5 dollar donation.
