“Mosaic is the art of making something that was whole, but has become broken or discarded, and creating something new and beautiful with the pieces.”
I’m best known for my stained glass mosaics on vintage windows. Although some of my art is about color for color’s sake, most of my current work revolves around women and the female form, as well as how women see themselves and each other. This is an exciting time to be a woman and I enjoy capturing the many facets of the female form in my art.
During my adult life, while raising kids and working full-time jobs, I dabbled in a number of different styles and mediums, from watercolor to jewelry making. I was fairly terrible at most of it, but with mosaic, I’ve found the perfect discipline for me. It’s a very forgiving art form, which I love. I enjoy every day in the studio, the beauty of light play on the glass and how one type of glass works with another. It’s all such an exciting journey!
Kai Raden owns Creations Studio & Gallery in Astoria where she teaches mosaic workshop for all ages and exhibits many artists’ creations.
