ROBERT PAULMENN - #12
514 12th Street (old YMCA building)
oil painting
Robert Paulmenn was born in 1950. He graduated from the duCret School of Art in Plainfield, NJ in 1971, where his principal focus was sculpture. After working at Great Adventure / Six Flags Amusement Park in Jackson, NJ as a sculptor and mold maker, he began painting scenery for a regional musical theater company. It was working on the large scale of backdrops, flats and set pieces that sparked a new interest fro him in painting. In 1980, Robert moved to New York City where he attended the Art Students League of NY and the National Academy of Art and had the opportunity to study with Daniel Greene, Harvey Dinnerstein and Ron Sherr. More recently, in the summer of 2010, he took a workshop with Burt Silverman that not only helped him turn a more critical eye on his work, but also to remember many of the shared principles of his earlier teachers.
In 2005, Robert won the Art Students League of New York award for oil painting at the Audubon Artists 63rd Annual Show at the Salmagundi Club in NYC. Robert lives in Astoria, Oregon with his wife Mary Lou and cats Woodrow and Lily.

You may have heard the term “studio practice” or maybe not. For me it means showing up at my studio and going to work every day. Over the past couple of years, this practice has been about exploring the possibilities of the limited palette. What this means is that I have reduced the number of colors I use to the three primaries: red, yellow and blue. These three can then be combined to make a secondary group of colors: orange, purple and green. These are also the complimentary colors to the primary group: orange to blue, purple to yellow and green to red. When these are combined, they create earthy greys. This limited and limitless palette has also helped maintain harmony in my work as well.
